In the preceding nine years, the Sirius Institute has made a number of advances on which our current/future plans are based. These include:

"Dolphin Attended/Assisted Water Birth"- A main focus of our work is the development of water birthing facilities, both land and water based, where women can birth their babies in water in the presence of dolphins. Similar work in Russia and elsewhere has demonstrated that babies born in this way are more creative, calm, more sound, stronger, develop more rapidly and are able to hold their breath for long periods of time and more.

We are in contact with the major water birth researchers including Dr. Gowri Motha, Dr. Michel Odent, Estelle Meyers and others. We have accomplished our first dolphin accompanied birth, of John Kehena Newland Lucy. The optimal birth methods we are developing will insure the best outcome for our children's births.

From a sound birth we go to explore their life preparation and education through CampParadise, a project of the Sirius Institute. Created over the years between Paradise and Michael around Tiger's (and others) education, this is a home/neighbourhood/ global and beyond education programme for children and their big people. It involves technology such as Internet and people who can pass on their *books of wisdom*. It enables each child's needs to be satisfied, the gifts each here to bring supported in coming through. The 'creation' of grounded, caring, loving, competent children is a given. Each is entitled to be all they are capable of being. The community involvement insures the bonded life of the children in the pod (the child's immediate kin circle or podlet if it is small) and their security within their world. Each child is loved, a precious being.

The center of activity in the child's life is called a pod home, and it functions also as a center of stability within neighbourhoods, communities. There is much happening in pod homes as they are the centers of life, arts, technology, crafts, music, care of the 'aina' (land - Hawai'ian), the natural world and more. Thus are children grounded in the real world by having contact/experience with how things are done.

"
Language Sculpting" - Language Sculpting, created by Paradise Newland, is a technology that enables us to create coherent realities through the conscious use of language. Its use simplifies and clarifies everyday communication and is valuable in designing clear communication between the dolphins or humans and other life. This is especially helpful in passing on clear language skills to children. The techniques can be applied to software that will allow documents to be "sculpted" automatically. [Various books on the method are in preparation]

"
Lucy Scale Technologies" - A mathematical model of musical harmony has been developed by Charles Lucy based on the work of John Harrison in the 1770's. A full exposition of Lucy tuning and its implications is available. Lucy scale has profound implications in many areas from music, to any resonant system, to basic physics, and signal analysis.

Briefly, since Pythagoras and the development of equal temperment tunings, musical harmonics have been thought to be based on simple whole number ratios. A model closer to reality is the Lucy tuning system based on Pi. One important advantage of the Lucy Scale is that "any" extant equal-temperment or other musical tuning can be converted to Lucy scale and then modulated and transposed into any other tuning. For the first time, this allows all the world's music to be played together in a harmonious way. Including cetacea. Lucy has demonstrated this in a recording called "Lucytuned Lullabies Around the World". [Tape and CD available now and website].

Music and Interspecies Communication

We have found that part of the cetacean acoustic communication is musical. Preliminary studies have determined that the songs of human choruses, canaries, humpback whales, dolphins and orcas are better described by the Lucy scale than by standard equal-temperment tunings. It is important to dolphin communication work because it is a consistent way to measure what scales and tunings the dolphins and other cetacea actually use. Following more analysis we will be able to match our musical communication with their scales, insuring that our productions will be compatible and in-tune to the cetacea, and may give us significant insights into the nature of cetacean language that will help us understand and perhaps translate it. [More details may be found in Charles Lucy's book: Pitch, Pi, and other Musical Paradoxes]

Song Swimmer Interface

The Song Swimmer interface we have developed allows dolphins and other cetacea to communicate with us directly by means of their voices. The interface converts cetacean whistles to a Musical Industry Digital Interface [MIDI] form. Once this is done, the cetacea can easily operate synthesizers, computers, and even waldos/teleoperators, robots, or other devices using only their acoustic output. The MIDI format is useful for detailed analysis using Lucy scale and other techniques. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the MIDI transform of dolphin sounds, and their analysis in musical form has been accomplished. Future developments of the interface will extend its frequency range, include the coding of clicks and other sounds and the ability to distinguish the sounds of several dolphins simultaneously. The Song Swimmer is key to the creation of interspecies concerts and music as detailed below.

Dolphin Valentine

Dolphin Valentine is an audio tape which demonstrates the conversion of dolphin whistles to a MIDI form followed by assigning a timbre (sound) to the pitch profiles thus obtained. The resulting MIDI stream is played through a synthesizer is quite musical and demonstrates the feasibility of dolphins operating computers and other devices with their sounds. (See:
Dolphin Valentine )

Sound to Vision Transforms

The dolphin acoustic band is ten times the human range. The only sensory system we have that is of equivalent bandwidth is vision. Therefore, we have developed methods that display sounds as visual patterns. This system has received a patent called the Harmonic Color Code System, by Myron Blazek, Charles Lucy, Michael Hyson. The system will be implemented in hardware and software in the future, and will be used in the speech training of deaf or hearing impaired children as well as the dolphin language work.

Inventions

Song Swimmer Communication Interface
(Demonstrated in the tape "Dolphin Valentine")

Binaural Hydrophones
(Design and draft patent completed)

"Voice of the Dolphin" Communication Interface/Vocoder

"Cold Fusion" & "Free" Energy Systems

One cold fusion system incorporates uniform polymer spheres as part of the system. Dr. Hyson is an inventor of a method to easily mass produce such polymer spheres, developed and patented during his time at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We wish to apply this technology to cold fusion reactors for use in energy generation and space travel, as well as domestic power production.

What's Next?

A Research Vessel

We can then sail anywhere on the planet. Plans are being made for recording the Sperm whales, humpbacks, spinners and Pacific Bottlenosed dolphins that come near Hawai'i. Hawai'i is farther from land than any other point on the earth. This is "whale central" and many species come here, making Hawai'i one of the best places to do such research
