TIME FOR NEW PARADIGM ....

We have a problem --- WE have a HUGE problem ....
and it is not going to go away unless WE do something about
it. In fact, it is going to grow day by day and become an
even bigger problem unless each of us make some fundamental
changes. We need to do things differently.

Some may not realize that Big Islanders dispose of over
800,000 pounds of garbage each day. To put this into
perspective --- this is the equivalent of permanently
parking more than 400 Volkswagens in the landfill
..... every day. We need to do things differently.

We have to stem the rising tide of refuse. Fortunately,
this big problem can be broken down into many small
solutions ... each of us has a part in the overall solution.
The cumulative effect of each of our individual efforts will
help solve the problem. But, we all have to join in ---
and ... we have to start NOW.

It is a waste of money and other resources to unnecessarily
put in the landfill most of the stuff we dump ... most of it
is reusable or recyclable. We are throwing money away ...
and spending more than we need to in the process.

We need to do things differently.

THE NEW "3 Rs" ..... REDUCE --- REUSE --- RECYCLE

When we were young we were taught the "3 Rs" at school. For
some, we now need to learn a new set of "Rs" and make them
a part of our daily life. As Reading, 'Riting & 'Rithmetic
were part of our early learning experience, we now need to
change our habits and make "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" as
rote as we have the elementary school basics.

It's about waste management, it's about our future ....
.... it's about time.
REDUCE

Carry your own shopping bag. Some grocery stores offer
rebates on your grocery bill when you use your own bag.
Buy only the amount you need.

Save paper --- don't print this e-mail Weekly Report.

REUSE

Maintain and repair durable products. Check tire pressure and
rotate tires routinely. Buy reusable products. Reuse plastic
and glass containers to store food, craft supplies and
hardware. Wash and reuse disposable cups, plastic utensils,
etc. Borrow, rent or share tools that you don't use very
often. Support swap meets, thrift stores and garage sales.

I know of a Waimea Elementary School class project where
students collect and shred newspapers and deliver them to a
local flower exporter for packing material --- maybe your
children can make arrangements with your local exporters.

RECYCLE

Buy recyclable products and containers. Buy recycled
products. Compost kitchen and yard waste. Recycle.

Recycle Hawai'i offers another "R" to the vocabulary:
RESPOND: Educate others on reduction and recycling.

HINTS TO REUSE AND RECYCLE --- THE VERY BASICS
Reuse, Sort, Prepare and Store
Aluminum

Sort: Separate aluminum from steel. (Hint: A magnet sticks to
steel, but won't stick to aluminum.)
Prepare: Keep your aluminum clean of food, paper, etc.
Bag: Toss your rinsed cans into a shopping bag.

Paper Fiber

Reuse: Shopping bags are good for wrapping or mailing.
Sort: Separate white paper, newsprint, cardboard and office
paper. No glossy materials, no fluorescent colors.
Prepare: It is not necessary to remove staples from paper.
Cardboard should be flattened.
Store: Most paper fibers can be boxed for storage but put
loose in the bins. No bags.
Note: Cardboard must be corrugated, meaning wavy brown paper
in between layers of brown paper. Cereal boxes are
called box board and don't have a recycling market.

Glass

Reuse: Use your empty jars & bottles to store bulk products.
Sort: Keep separate bags for green, brown, and clear glass.
Prepare: Rinse to remove traces of food or beverages.

Plastic

Reuse: Some classroom teachers will use plastic for art
projects, paint storage, desk organizers, gardening
projects or science experiments.
Market: At this time there is no cost effective way to
recycle plastics on the Big Island. It costs far more
than any proceeds derived from sales.

You know those plastic grocery bags you have stuffed into
each other under your kitchen sink --- rather than accumulate
them there, why don't you drop them off on your next Farmers'
Market visit and let them reuse the bags?

Plant Material

Compost --- Compost --- Compost.

There is no logical reason for anyone to deposit plant
material at the transfer container or landfill. Start a
compost pile, compost your kitchen waste ... buy or borrow
a shredder and chip the stuff up and scatter in the garden.
Please, don't dump any more plant material in the landfill.

Mahalo to Recycle Hawai'i for allowing us to share some of
these hints with you. You may reach Recycle Hawai`i anytime
