—Did you know that by growing your own backyard garden you are making a difference in your community? 

Backyard gardens make it possible for people to produce more of their own food and have extra to share or barter with neighbors and family.  They also help address growing concerns about food safety, GMOs, and rising food prices due to global weather factors and economic fluctuations passed on to consumers. 

Dr. Richard Alan Miller is a renowned herbalist, biophysicist, marketing specialist, and author of more than 40 books and 250 articles on a wide range of topics drawn from over 40 years’ experience in small-farm agriculture. 

On Monday, March 28 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Lyman Museum, Dr. Miller talks about backyard gardening on the Big Island, “how satisfying it is to eat from your own environment, instead of something from another part of the world.  This helps strengthen rural community development by supporting local producers, which in turn promotes ‘food sovereignty.’ 

It is about you and your neighbors and who they are in your life, about being proud of what you are and what you can do for yourself.” 

Admission is free for Museum members; $3 nonmembers. 

Seating is limited to 65 persons. 

No tickets for presale; first come first seated. 

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawai`i to tell the story of its islands and people. 

The Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:30 pm.
