I have noticed while swimming in the Pacific in more recent years, in southern California and Mexico, that the dolphins (bottlenose, i assume, from their near-shore and migratory/patrolling behavior) spend quite a bit of time inspecting - backs arched, rather still, pointed toward me. When I was young, in the 60s, they tended to play with us, surfing alongside in the waves. I wonder if their behavior has changed (we've all seen bullet-holed dolphins from fishermen over time, dead bodies on shore) for any human behavioral reason? Any experiences in such behavioral changes, anyone?

The waters were cleaner in the La Jolla area then, than after 70s and huge building and population increases. Has that area experienced reduction in dolphin populations?

I now live in extreme northern CA, where there seem to be no dolphin species, (possibly due to runoff from Humboldt Bay quite polluted with dioxins,I understand) I would have expected some near-shore species. Is there a history of dolphins in these colder waters of Oregon and Northern CA?
