April 22 GLOBE BODY: HEAVENLY EARTH DAY Associated Press SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 38A Earth Day, today, is going extraterrestrial. Florida Deep Space Communications Network will beam Humpback whale songs into the heavens for Sirius Institute in Puna, Hawaii. The signal will be broadcast using a 5-meter parabolic dish antenna detectable from 3.5 light-years away, roughly 18 trillion miles. "We feel it is important to invite (dolphins and whales), the oldest sentient race on the planet, to . . . share their songs with the universe,"said Michael Hyson, Sirius' research director.
